What Size Dumpster Fits in a Driveway?

Driveway width and length limit which sizes are practical before you even get to what your project needs. Here is how to check quickly.

Standard Driveway Widths and What Fits

Most residential driveways in the Asheville area run 9 to 12 feet wide for a single-car driveway, and 16 to 24 feet for a double. Every container size we carry, 10-yard through 40-yard, is roughly the same width, about 7.5 feet, so width is rarely the limiting factor for placement itself. What changes by size is length.

Container Lengths by Size

  • 10-yard and 15-yard — 14 to 16 feet long, fits comfortably in most single-car driveways
  • 20-yard and 30-yard — 22 feet long, needs a standard double driveway or a longer single driveway
  • 40-yard — 22 feet long but taller, generally needs the same footprint as a 20 or 30-yard with more vertical clearance

What Actually Limits Placement

Width and length of the container itself are rarely the real constraint. The bigger factors are the delivery truck’s ability to maneuver, needing roughly 60 feet of straight clearance to back in, and whether the driveway can accommodate the container without blocking a garage door or other daily-use access point you need during your rental.

Short or Narrow Driveways

If your driveway is on the shorter or narrower side, describe it when you book rather than guessing which size will fit. In some cases, alternative placement on a different part of the property works better than trying to force a larger container into a tight driveway.

Measuring Your Own Driveway

If you want to check before calling, measure the straight-line length of your driveway from the street to where you want the container placed, and note the width at its narrowest point along that path, not just at the street. This gives us the information we need to confirm the right size fits before a truck ever shows up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a 20-yard dumpster fit in a single-car driveway?

It depends on length. A single-car driveway with enough depth, generally 22 feet or more, can accommodate a 20-yard, but a shorter driveway may only fit a 10-yard or 15-yard comfortably.

Does dumpster width vary much between sizes?

No, most sizes are roughly the same width, about 7.5 feet. Length and height are what change most between container sizes.

What if my driveway cannot fit any standard size?

Alternative placement elsewhere on the property is often possible. Describe your driveway and property layout when you call so we can find the right solution.
