Hurricane Helene Flood Debris Removal in Asheville, NC
Federal programs ended. Private property cleanup is now your responsibility. We help.
⚠️ All Federal Debris Programs in Buncombe County Have Ended
The Right-of-Way Program ended March 31, 2025. Waterway removal concluded June 30, 2025. The Private Property Debris Removal mission closed September 26, 2025 — clearing approximately 4,800 homes. If Helene flood debris remains on your property, it is now entirely your responsibility. A private roll-off dumpster is the most practical legal solution.

What Goes in the Dumpster — And What Doesn’t
✅ Accepted: Flood-damaged drywall (non-asbestos), waterlogged flooring, destroyed furniture, damaged cabinetry, ruined appliances (not refrigerators with refrigerant), storm debris, yard waste.
❌ NOT accepted: Refrigerators with refrigerant intact, liquid paint, motor oil, batteries, propane tanks, mud/soil (Buncombe County landfill rejects this), asbestos materials, electronics. Take prohibited items to Buncombe County Solid Waste at 85 Panther Branch Road, Alexander, NC 28701 (828-250-5462).
⚠️ Asbestos Warning for Pre-1980 Asheville Homes
If your home was built before 1980, have an asbestos inspection done before gutting any flood-damaged walls or removing old flooring. Asheville’s older homes in Montford, West Asheville, and North Asheville commonly contain asbestos in drywall joint compound, 9×9 inch floor tiles, vinyl sheet flooring, and pipe insulation. Asbestos requires licensed abatement — it cannot go in a standard roll-off.
The Mold Timeline — Why Speed Matters
Mold begins growing within 24 to 48 hours of water intrusion on porous materials. Basic mold remediation in Asheville costs $2,000–$6,000 per room. Whole-home remediation can reach $30,000+. A 15-yard dumpster to remove flood debris costs $350. Prompt debris removal is the most cost-effective mold prevention available.
Illegal Dumping Warning — Up to $15,000/Day in Fines
Since federal programs ended, illegal dumping has increased across WNC. Under North Carolina law, dumping more than 500 pounds of material is a Class 1 felony with fines up to $15,000 per day per violation. Buncombe County is actively investigating cases. A licensed dumpster rental is the only legal and safe disposal method.
